Mexico bans fishing for white sharks

On January 27th 2014, the Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (Sagarpa) has established a permanent ban on fishing for great white sharks ( Carcharodon carcharias) in Mexican waters.

The related text was published today in the Official Gazette (DOF : 27/01/2014). A full copy of the original text ( in Spanish language ) is provided below.

It states that fishing for white sharks in marine waters under federal jurisdiction, on both coasts of Mexico, is strictly prohibited.

According to the third Article, all specimens of white sharks caught incidentally during recreational (sport) or commercial fishing operations shall be released immediately and returned to sea.

Sagarpa assured that fishermen who violate the agreement will be subject to penalties established by the General Law on Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture and other applicable laws.
