Shark Alliance joins Italian MEP in urging European Parliament to support closing the loopholes in EU ban on shark finning

Today, as part of the European Parliament’s considerations of the European Commission’s proposal to strengthen the EU ban on shark finning (slicing off a shark’s fins and discarding the body at sea), Mr. Andrea Zanoni, Member of the European Parliament's Committee on Environment and MEP of the Group of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe, introduces a report that reinforces the Commission’s legislative proposal to end all shark fin removal on board vessels by requiring that sharks be landed with their fins still naturally attached. Such a requirement is increasingly accepted as the simplest, most reliable way of preventing shark finning.
Endangered Turtles and Sharks Lose Out in MSC Longline Swordfish Certification Decision

Sustainable seafood advocates were disappointed by the recent decision to allow the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) to eco-certify the Canadian longline swordfish fishery that is responsible for high bycatch of sharks and endangered sea turtles.

The Shark Alliance is pleased to report that, at their 15-16 December meeting, the EU Council of Fisheries Ministers accepted the European Commission’s science-based proposals to maintain Total Allowable Catch (TAC) limits for porbeagle and spurdog sharks at zero. This decision comes despite pressure from the fishing industry to once again allow landings from these Critically Endangered populations.
