Critically endangered porbeagle shark on Dutch restaurant menu

Despite EU rules to protect it, a rare porbeagle shark was auctioned last week at Scheveningen, in the Netherlands. The nearly three meter long shark was caught in the Southern North Sea and sold to a fishmonger from Katwijk who put the animal on the menu.

Fishing nations reject even bare minimum measures for threatened species

Shark Advocates International is expressing deep disappointment at the failure of Parties to the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC) to act on shark conservation proposals at their annual meeting this week. Proposed protections for threatened hammerhead and oceanic whitetip sharks were defeated and the ban on finning (slicing off a shark’s fins and discarding the body at sea) was not strengthened. Parties could not even agree to require the reporting of shark catch data for any of eight categories recommended by scientists.

European Shark Week startet mit Aufruf das Augenmerk aufs Finning zu legen

Die Shark Alliance, ein Zusammenschluss aus mehr als 100 Naturschutz-, Wissenschafts- und Freizeitorganisationen, die sich dem Haischutz verschrieben haben, startet am 9. Oktober in die vierte, jährliche European Shark Week, indem sie Mitglieder des Europäischen Parlaments (MdEPs) dazu aufruft, das Finning-Verbot der Europäischen Union zu stärken. Finning bezeichnet die verschwenderische Praxis bei der die Flossen eines Hais abgetrennt und der Körper zurück ins Meer geworfen wird.
